What is Broad-Spectrum CBD?

Whether you’re a tried and true CBD customer or a first-timer, there is always room to learn more about the CBD industry. Our goal at The Green Dragon CBD is to help explain some of these common terms that we see associated with CBD products. We want to ensure that consumers understand exactly what they are getting. In our last blog, we broke down the definition of full-spectrum CBD. When you purchase any CBD product, you can often choose from either full-spectrum CBD, broad-spectrum CBD, and isolate CBD. Today, let’s focus on defining broad-spectrum CBD.

What is Broad-Spectrum CBD?

These three main types of extracts all have slight differences that vary in fit from consumer to consumer. In one sentence, a broad-spectrum CBD product is a substance that contains CBD and some (but not all) of the extracts that are naturally found in the cannabis plant, including flavonoids, terpenes, and other cannabinoids. In every cannabis plant, there are more than 100 different cannabinoids. There are also more than 150 terpenes (this is what affects the plant’s fragrance), and about 20 different flavonoids (which are similar to terpenes in their varying therapeutic effects).

However, the main distinction between broad-spectrum CBD and full-spectrum CBD is that broad-spectrum CBD contains a specific selection of cannabinoids or terpenes. They may include proprietary blends or specific combinations to produce a desired effect. Since the technicians are putting together exactly what they want, broad-spectrum products will typically not have any Delta-9 THC. This is the middle ground between isolate and full-spectrum. Full-spectrum includes everything including THC, while isolate solely isolates CBD and broad-spectrum falls in between.

Broad-Spectrum CBD Example

For example, a product that contains a specific formulation of just CBD and CBG (another cannabinoid) is "broad-spectrum" because it's more than just CBD isolate and less than everything (full-spectrum). Broad-Spectrum CBD is formulated with specific components, so it is most common to not have any Delta-9 THC in the product. Since it serves no purpose at the super low levels of legality (0.3%) and many people need a product that is THC-free, they leave it out.

Cannabinoids and terpenes can be extracted in many different ways including steam distillation, lipid extraction, carbon dioxide extraction, and solvent extraction.

Benefits and Factors

Broad-spectrum is preferred by many in the community that are looking for a full experience while avoiding any potential THC consumption. Even though these products do not contain more than trace amounts of THC, there is still the option to enjoy the “entourage effect.” This allows the elements to fully work together rather than a single cannabinoid. This is likely to increase the beneficial health effects that one may experience.

All forms of CBD can take effect in the body by processing through our endocannabinoid system. Taking CBD triggers your natural endocannabinoid system (ECS) through two types of receptors, CB1 and CB2. It signals your body’s organs and various systems to restore themselves into balance. In this way, it reduces the “over-reaction” of your body which is causing it to trigger pain and inflammation.

In Conclusion

While there’s still a great deal of research to uncover to confirm the positive effects of broad-spectrum CBD, research suggests that it can help for several reasons. Some say it can be helpful as an anti-inflammatory, anti-seizure solution, anti-anxiety, for improved sleep, and more. Many may prefer broad-spectrum CBD because they can enjoy a full-bodied experience that may be specifically tailored to their needs. However, they don't have to worry if you will pass or fail a drug test.

Broad-spectrum CBD products are incredibly popular in all forms. These are very commonly known in the form of an oil or tincture.
