Weed Grinders: Get The Most Out of Your Smoke
Grinding your weed helps you get the most out of your bud by maximizing surface area and enhancing the extraction of aromas and flavors. It also improves airflow and burn quality for a smoother smoke. For the most potent, flavorful sessions, use a weed grinder to prepare your flower before rolling a joint, packing a bowl, or preparing edibles.
What is a Grinder?
A grinder is a tool used to break down cannabis into small, consistent pieces for a smoother burn. The most common type of grinder is a four-piece metal grinder, composed of a lid with teeth for grinding; a grind section with teeth for grinding and holes for small pieces to fall through; a storage chamber that collects and stores ground weed; and a kief catcher where kief is collected. Grinders are usually circular with the chambers stacked on top of one another, but they come in a range of different styles, sizes and materials.
Types of Grinders
Small Grinders
Small grinders (1.5 to 2 inches in diameter) are portable and great for small quantities; but may require multiple grinding sessions and are less likely to have more premium features like kief catchers or multiple chambers.
Large Grinders
A larger grinder (2.5 inches or more in diameter) means a bigger capacity, more appropriate for grinding large quantities. They may be less portable and more expensive than their smaller counterparts.
Metal Weed Grinders
Metal grinders are durable and effective, though they may be more expensive than other materials.
Plastic Weed Grinders
Plastic weed grinders are less expensive than other options, but more prone to breaking.
Dugout & Grinder Sets
Many dugouts (carrying cases) include a matching grinder and other accessories, so you can keep everything you need in one place.
Two & Three-piece Grinders
These grinders are simple and functional, but may not include nice-to-have features like kief catchers.
Five-piece Grinders
This type of grinder features an additional chamber for even more kief accumulation, separating terpene-rich dust into “clean” and “dirty” kief, which can have different uses.
How to Grind THC Flower
Step 1: Select your favorite THC flower. Explore premium flower options here.
Step 2: Load your nugs. Remove the lid of the grinder. Using your fingers, break the bud into smaller pieces. Place the flower pieces around the center of the grinder, but not in the middle. Do not overload your grinder.
Step 3: Grind the flower. Put the lid back on the grinder. Hold the bottom of the grinder with one hand and rotate the lid with the other hand about 10 times, depending on your desired fineness.
Step 4: Tap it. Before removing the lid, give your grinder a firm tap against the table or the palm of your hand to help dislodge the flower.
Step 5: Collect the flower: Separate the grinding chamber from the collection chamber. Scoop out the newly ground flower.
Step 6: Enjoy! Use your freshly ground flower in a joint, pipe, or make your own edibles.
Best Ways to Enjoy Your Weed
Roll a Joint or Blunt
Grind to a medium to fine grind, similar to what you would find in a tobacco cigarette. This will ensure even burning and a smooth experience. See tips on how to roll a joint here.
Pack a Bowl
If you are using a screen, position it at the bottom of the bowl. If not, use a large chunk of flower at the bottom of the bowl before packing the ground flower on top. Pack lightly at the bottom and progressively tighter near the top. This promotes even airflow and helps the bowl stay lit or develop a “cherry.” Read more tips on How to Pack a Bowl in our blog here.
Make Edibles
You may want to use a rough grind for making edibles, to ensure that your treats are evenly infused with herb, but you can still strain the plant material out when making butter or oil.
How to Clean Your Weed Grinder
Eventually, your grinder will accumulate sticky residue, making it difficult to operate. Here’s how to easily clean it:
Step 1: Disassemble your grinder and set aside any leftover plant material
Step 2: Place the grinder into a container, such as a ziploc bag, and add enough isopropyl alcohol to submerge the parts
Step 3: Let the grinder soak for 20-30 minutes, agitating the container occasionally to break apart plant residue
Step 4: Pour out the alcohol and use a brush to scrub the grinder, including each chamber
Step 5: Rinse with clean, warm water
Step 6: Let the grinder dry completely
