What is Hemp-Derived Delta 9 THC?

Brie Lowrey

Delta 9 THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), also known simply as THC, is a popular and well known cannabinoid. Now, THC does have different forms, such as Delta 8 THC, Delta 10 THC, THC-O, and others, but since Delta 9 is the most common form of THC found in the cannabis plants, it gets to be known as THC. In this blog, we will discuss what exactly Delta 9 THC is, a little on how it’s made, why it’s legal at certain levels, benefits, and more. Read on to learn more about this psychoactive cannabinoid.

What is Delta 9 THC?

Delta 9 THC, THC, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, Delta 9, D9, or whatever else you want to call it, is the main psychoactive chemical that is naturally occuring in cannabis plants. It is found primarily in the resin produced by the buds and leaves of female cannabis plants.

Since Delta 9 is found as a naturally occurring chemical in cannabis plants, it means it’s 100% natural. When it comes to creating Delta 9 products, though, a little more has to go into them. To keep things short and simple; THC is extracted from cannabis plants to make a concentrated extract that can then be used to create products. Another way is to convert CBD through isomerization.

Delta 9 products are the result from these processes. There are many benefits to using THC products, but let’s look at the legality of these products first.

Is Delta 9 Legal?

Technically speaking, Delta 9 THC is a federally restricted substance in the United States. Fortunately, the 2018 Farm Bill made hemp and its derivatives federally legal. You can find cannabis products in states with overriding cannabis laws or in products made with hemp. Hemp is a cannabis plant that produces less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC on a dry weight basis. Even with the severely low concentrations of THC, Delta 9 products that are made from hemp can still be produced with concentrations that create the “high” experience that is associated with marijuana while being federally legal.

Delta 9 vs. Delta 8

Delta 9 THC and Delta 8 THC are chemically similar with only a small difference. This difference may be small on the chemical level, but creates a large difference in potency. Delta 9 has been known to be 50-60% more powerful in effects and benefits than Delta 8. While you see more Delta 8 products around, Delta 9 is slowly making itself more known in states where Delta 8 is commonly seen.

What Are the Benefits & Effects of Delta 9?

The effects of Delta 9 THC naturally coincide with the benefits of CBD and Delta 8 THC. Check out the top 8 benefits of Delta 8 THC here. Delta 9 specifically affects both the body and the mind. The “high” that is produced can be felt in the body and mind. THC users have stated that it feels euphoric, light, and mood-boosting with calming effects, for the most part. THC users choose these products not only for their recreational high, but also for the mood-boosting properties as well as physical benefits.

Some physical benefits include;

Anti-nausea

Anti-inflammatory

Chronic pain relief

Appetite stimulant

Reduce muscle spasms

The key to receiving the benefits without the well known side effects of paranoia and anxiety, is to dose properly.

How Do You Dose Delta 9?

As with any cannabinoid and cannabidiol product, you must pay attention to dosing properly. When you properly dose your product, you get the desired effect, whether it be physical, mental, or recreational benefits.

Although the most common way for people to use Delta 9 is to smoke marijuana. However, for our purposes in discussing hemp products, you must utilize other forms like edibles since marijuana is a controlled substance and only legal in certain states.

Dosing Delta 9 isn’t as simple as taking 1 gummy and that’s it. First, ask yourself why you’re using this product. If you’re using it for the benefits, but don’t want to feel high, you might take the instructions on your product and cut it in half from the suggested starting dose. If you want to feel “high”, you might start with the suggested starting dose. The thing is, everyone and everyone’s body is different and reacts differently to these products. Even further, if these products have different strains (Indica, Sativa, Hybrid) then those react differently. Even further than that, if your product has different cannabinoids or CBD in it, then it will also react differently in your system. Our suggestion is always to start low and work your way up, making sure to wait the proper amount of time, based on what type of product you have. It’s always best to read your product’s suggested use, keeping in mind that if you’re a beginner and you start with their suggested dose size, that you will probably feel the mental effects of the “high” experience.

When it comes down to dosing, you can properly dose by paying specific attention to your particular product and by experimenting yourself. For some help on measuring your product’s success, read this blog.
