What is HHC (Hexahydrocannabinol)?

Brie Lowrey

It’s difficult to keep up with every single thing that is trending. While we can’t help you with the latest TikTok dance or whatever the latest celebrity gossip is, we can keep you up to date with what newest cannabinoids are coming to the market. Now, let’s talk about one of the latest cannabinoids to hit… HHC.

What is HHC?

When it comes to what’s going on in the CBD, D8, D10, and CBG world... and whatever other scramble of letters and numbers scientists can come up with, lots of new cannabinoids are starting to make appearances. HHC, or Hexahydrocannabinol, is one of those cannabinoids. As with most cannabinoid research, there’s very few studies done on HHC, leaving room for contradictory information.

HHC can be found naturally in the seeds and pollen of hemp, but in such small quantities that scientists had to figure out a way to synthetically create it. The product that is created at the end of the process is chemically the same as naturally-occurring hemp.

HHC is a cannabinoid that is super similar to THC in its properties and its effects. Daily CBD states that “HHC is to THC as margarine is to butter”. What does that actually mean, though? In order to make HHC you (experts, not you or me) add hydrogen molecules to THC. As we all know (insert eye roll here), that process of adding hydrogen molecules to something is called hydrogenation. Because of this process, margarine (hydrogenated vegetable oil) has a longer shelf life. Same with HHC, because of the hydrogenation of THC, it can also have a substantially longer shelf life. It is shelf stable in the way that it is much more resistant to improper storage or heat exposure than THC and CBD. HHC has been known to be dubbed the “apocalypse cannabinoid”. So, if you’re looking for your bunker-ready THC-like product, it might be the option for you.

Benefits of HHC Products

This is really why we are all here, huh? What can HHC products do for me? Why should I be interested in trying an HHC product? Again, we can only go off of testimonials for products like these since scientific studies are severely lacking. Unfortunately, because of the lack of scientific research for products like these, there tends to be some contradicting information. Remember when it comes to products such as CBD, Delta 8, HHC, and others, you should try the product and listen to your body and how you feel when using it. Everyone experiences products differently.

For HHC-specific benefits, there are a few that line up with other THC products. Here are some benefits you could experience:

  • Chronic pain management
  • Promote deeper, restorative sleep
  • Reduce nausea and vomiting
  • Reduce anxiety

In addition to these benefits, the experience you can get from HHC is very similar to THC. Users from Reddit and reviewers from different brand sites confirm the similar effects. Expect mental euphoria, clarity, energy, and stimulating effects. This can contribute to great focus, as well. Most users also say that unlike THC, HHC doesn’t provide the unfortunate feelings of anxiety and paranoia.

As for potency, it seems that HHC is less potent than Delta 8, milligram-per-milligram. That being said, with certain extracts some products can be more potent than Delta 8. Of course, everyone experiences different cannabinoids, products, and strains differently than the next person. Make sure you are dosing your products properly and remember the rule of thumb; start low, give it time, and work your way up.

As you’re traversing the lands of Delta 8, CBD, HHC, THC-V, etc., use our blog to measure your product’s success. Track your product and its benefits using this helpful guide here. This can help you track your experience with HHC (and other) products.

HHC Products: HHC-O and HHC-P

Of course, there are plenty of types of HHC Products such as vape pens, carts, dabs, edibles, and more! Some products, however, may contain other cannabinoids that have "HHC" in front of them. So, are these still HHC products? The answer is yes and no. HHC-O and HHC-P are HHC type products. When I say "HHC type products", I mean, the addition of the O and P make the original HHC product more potent. HHC is meant to be a mild cannabinoid that even first time users can feel comfortable dosing.

HHC-O

HHC-O is made using the extracts from pollen and seeds of the hemp plant. The acetate process that creates HHC-O makes the cannabinoid up to 3x more potent than HHC. HHC-O will give you the psychointoxicating effect you're looking for, but won't take you on a bad trip. HHC-O is less potent than HHC-P.

HHC-P

HHC-P is actually more similar to THC-P (though, HHC products don't contain THC) than HHC whereas its effects and potency are alike. HHC-P offers the intensified euphoric and psychedelic experience without subjecting you to couch lock.

HHC is Legal

Of course HHC is legal or else we wouldn’t be selling HHC products, right!? Let’s talk about why it is considered a legal cannabinoid. The 2018 Farm Bill legalizes hemp and hemp-derived compounds across the US. Because HHC is found naturally in hemp but also even synthetic HHC is the same chemically as natural HHC, so both are federally legal under the Farm Bill. The products also contain less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC. Though HHC is federally legal, as with most other THC products, each state is subject to its own laws.

According to some sources, HHC can even potentially evade drug test results. Again, as with new (and “old”) cannabinoids, research is unfortunately lacking. We know that with all hemp/cannabis products, they all contain at least trace amounts of THC. Without the proper research, don’t let the “potential” for these products not showing up on a drug test hurt your job security.
