CBD for autism. Of course, there is no cure for autism, nor is there treatment or medicine that works for every person with autism. However, finding even a little relief for some symptoms of autism can be helpful to people living with it.
WHAT IS AUTISM?
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that usually appears during early childhood but can potentially go undiagnosed until adulthood. Autism impacts three main areas; social interactions, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive or ritualistic behaviors. This disability negatively impacts the nervous system in our bodies. The range and severity of the symptoms can vary widely.
Some common signs and symptoms include;
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Unusual mood
- Emotional reactions
- Anxiety, stress, excessive worry
While both children and adults can suffer from symptoms of Autism, this article is written for CBD for autism in adults.
CBD, YOUR ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM, AND WHAT THEY DO
We have definitely gone over everything in other blogs, but let’s do a quick recap of it all.
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical compound found naturally in the cannabis and hemp plants. Your endocannabinoid system (ECS) is the thing in your body that controls a whole slew of things such as your nervous system, mood, immune system, and more. Within this system there are 2 types of receptors, CB1 and CB2. CBD indirectly interacts with these receptors to help keep your system in balance. Without the presence of CBD, your system can be out of balance. Your body naturally makes endocannabinoids, but when your body doesn’t produce enough of them, that’s when you can get sick, feel anxious, stressed, not get enough sleep, or more.
CBD FOR AUTISM
While CBD isn’t the end-all-be-all for autism relief or symptom reduction, it can be helpful in relieving some symptoms associated with autism. While we recognize that both children and adults may suffer from autism and that CBD may help reduce and relieve some symptoms of autism.
As always, research is severely lacking for CBD in general, the FDA did approve the first-ever drug derived from marijuana to treat some forms of epilepsy. Epilepsy is a common symptom of autism, so this FDA approved drug can help combat certain forms of it. Since “CBD medicine” has been approved for use in reduction of epileptic symptoms, this means other products with CBD in them can help relieve seizures and epileptic symptoms.
If you’re not a prescription person or if you’re just interested in trying something more natural first before looking to doctor prescribed drugs, CBD products may be helpful in reducing certain symptoms of autism. People suffering from symptoms such as epilepsy and seizures can benefit from using CBD, as the FDA found out when they approved the prescription drug.
CBD can also help relieve symptoms of IBS and constipation. CBD works with your ECS to help keep things balanced in your intestinal and nervous system. Other gastrointestinal issues can also stem from anxiety and stress. These can be separate issues, but since CBD helps regain balance in your entire ECS, you don’t necessarily have to pinpoint whether you have IBS, constipation, or just digestive issues due to anxiety and stress.
Autism can negatively impact your mental health. It can create unusual moods, emotional reactions, anxiety, stress, excessive worry, and more. CBD is very popular in helping reduce mental health issues on either side; anxiety or depression. CBD can restore balance in your ECS which in turn, can help calm and ease your anxiety, stress, or depression.
Sleep is super important, especially when your body is battling other symptoms and illnesses. Autism can create sleeplessness and lack of sleep can be negatively impactful on the rest of your health; mental and physical. CBD is great for dealing with lack of sleep and other other sleep issues. You can find CBD products that do or do not contain melatonin, in case you have a sensitivity to melatonin. Read our blogs on CBD for sleep and melatonin for sleep.
While CBD may not help reduce or relieve every symptom, it can definitely help you find relief with some symptoms and side effects. As with starting any new routine, make sure you take your CBD product daily (or multiple times a day, depending on your product type) and give it time to start working. Let your body get accustomed to your product.
DIFFERENT CBD PRODUCTS
If you’re ready to try CBD to relieve some of your autism symptoms, there are many types of products with varying strengths and flavors. Choosing which product works best for you and what symptoms you are experiencing can be tricky and even frustrating at times. Our staff at The Green Dragon CBD is always happy to help steer you in the right direction, but for the most part, it will be trial and error. What works best for one person may not be best for the next.
Research is a big part of this. Knowing about the different types of CBD products that are out there is a big help. If there’s a certain symptom that you’re looking to relieve, there are products that can be more specified. Maybe you’re looking for something that can help relieve insomnia, then a product with added ingredients such as melatonin would be better suited for you.
There are 3 general variations of CBD products; Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, and CBD Isolate. Visit our Education Center here to learn more about these different types. Knowing that there are even trace amounts of THC in a product might deter you from that product. If you are worried about failing a drug test, maybe a Broad Spectrum or CBD Isolate product would be best.
CBD oil and tinctures are a great way to take CBD for autism symptom relief. There are many different strengths and flavors of CBD oil. A great sleep tincture is Lazarus Naturals Sleep Oil. Or if you’re looking for overall and general relief, try any of Lazarus Naturals Oils in the different flavors like, French Vanilla Mocha and Chocolate Mint. Try more common flavors like Watermelon and Berries from Canna River. Or, maybe you’re looking for CBD Isolate with less flavorful choices like Medterra. For other flavorless options in Broad Spectrum, try cbdMD.
CBD gummies are hands down the most fun way to take your daily CBD. CBDFx delivers your daily CBD plus multivitamins in their Multivitamin CBD Gummies For Women & Men. For CBD plus sleep, try CBDFx CBD + Melatonin Gummies or Green Roads Sleepy Z’s Gummies. If you’re on the go, try Lazarus Naturals CBD Fruit Tarts in 4 different flavors! JustCBD is our biggest gummy brand with fun gummies such as Sugar Free CBD Gummy Worms, Cherry CBD Gummies, Sour Gummy Bears, Peach Gummy Rings, and more. Check out our entire CBD Gummy collection here.
CBD capsules are a great option for those that don’t necessarily want flavors or having to deal with oils and tinctures. Convenience is what you get if you choose capsules over other forms of CBD. For sleep issues, capsules such as Medterra Good Night Capsules and Green Roads Sleep CBD Capsules. For general relief, try these capsules from Medterra or Cycling Frog.
CBD Flower is a smart way to use CBD as it allows for a quicker release time. You will feel the effects almost immediately. Try a preroll from Savage or their flower in Lifter Sauce or Richie Rich. Canna River delivers a nice CBG Flower as well.
HOW TO DOSE CBD PRODUCTS
Dosing CBD products varies with different products and, of course, with different bodies. Everyone reacts differently to CBD due to metabolism, body chemistry, gender, genetic history, the different CBD products, and more!
We always recommend to start with the low dose that’s on your specific product, listen to how your body is reacting to the product, and work your way up from there.
