What is HHC-P? Understanding its Benefits & Effects

It seems like just about every cannabis manufacturer is on the hunt for the newest and most powerful cannabinoid, and HHC may just take the cake. While there’s still a lot to learn about HHC, we do know that one of its variants, HHC-P, is stirring up waves thanks to its reportedly legendary potency.

While HHC-P differs from other new cannabinoids like THCh in a chemical sense, it shares many of the same molecular predecessors as options like delta-8 and delta-9 THC. But whether HHC-P is the right choice for you depends on your goals, preferences, and limitations.

Below, we’ll outline what HHC-P is, where it comes from, and how it can benefit you. From there, we’ll explore what you need to know to welcome this cannabinoid into your routine safely and effectively.

What is HHC-P and What Makes it Special?

HHC-P, or hexahydrocannabiphorol, is a cannabinoid synthesized from other molecules in cannabis.

While trace quantities of HHC and HHC-P have been detected in hemp extracts, this cannabinoid is typically created in a lab via a process known as isomerization. When it naturally occurs in cannabis plants, it’s a byproduct of cannabinoids like delta-8 and delta-9 THC.

However, when these compounds are exposed to heat, they are hydrogenated or have hydrogen added to their chemical structure. By replicating this process with THC-P molecules, manufacturers can create isolated HHC-P that can be added to products like tinctures and vape cartridges.

Researchers have been aware of HHC since 1940, but HHC-P has only recently entered the scene as a possible alternative to THC. HHC-P’s predecessor, THC-P, is believed to be up to 10x stronger than traditional delta-8 or delta-9 THC. It’s safe to assume that HHC-P produces similar effects, though no concrete evidence shows how it impacts the brain.

How is HHC-P made?

Most HHC and HHC-P molecules are synthesized from delta-8 or delta-9 THC in a laboratory. This is possible because cannabinoids share the same chemical “parts” in different orders and groupings. Just as cakes, cookies, and pies are all made from the same basic ingredients, different cannabinoids share predecessors that give them similar traits.

The first cannabinoid precursor (a molecule that forms a cannabinoid) that develops in plants is CBGA or cannabigerolic acid. As a plant develops and chemical changes occur, CBGA begins to split and develop into a host of other precursors, including CBDA and THCA. When exposed to heat, these compounds transform into the CBD and THC we know and love.

Because they come from the same roots, though, these cannabinoids are made of the same molecules. When rearranged via isomerization, a cannabinoid’s structure can be changed and converted into something new. That means manufacturers can take a common cannabinoid – say, CBD – and move its molecules until it turns into HHC or HHC-P.

Is HHC-P legal?

Because HHC-P is not a derivative of THC, it doesn’t face the same legal restrictions under the 2018 Farm Bill or other federal legislation. In fact, it technically isn’t classified as a controlled substance. Only tetrahydro- cannabinoids, not hexahydro-, are controlled by international drug conventions. As a result, HHC-P is not explicitly illegal at a state or federal level.

But that doesn’t mean that there are no caveats to consider. Some states release laws specifically targeting and regulating hemp-derived cannabinoids like delta-8 or delta-11 THC. In these areas, it’s possible legislation may prohibit or restrict access to HHC-P, especially as time goes on. And though conventional drug tests check for THC, not HHC, it’s unclear how HHC-P may impact test results. So, if you’re someone who needs to be careful about using potentially restricted substances, it might be best to stay away from HHC-P for now.

Common HHC-P Effects

As of 2023, no studies have investigated how HHC-P impacts the human mind and body, but anecdotal evidence tells us that HHC-P can be good for mood, stress, and sleep. Overall, the effects of HHC-P are reported to be fairly similar to those of THC, though they’re generally much more potent and long-lasting.

Potential effects of using HHC-P may include:

  • Feelings of euphoria
  • Boost in mood
  • Relaxation and relief from stress
  • Lowered anxiety
  • Appetite stimulation
  • Sleepiness

Does HHC-P get you high?

HHC is considered a psychoactive compound that binds to endocannabinoid receptors in the brain like THC does. So, simply put, HHC-P can get you high – for many users, that’s precisely the goal.

But because HHC-P is so much stronger than other cannabinoids, it can be easy to overdo things and overwhelm yourself. It might be best to experiment with HHC-P at small, controlled doses to see how you react before aiming for specific results.

Potential Benefits of HHC-P

As a unique member of the cannabinoid family, HHC-P has some benefits that set it apart. But to take advantage of those benefits, it’s important to exercise some caution. Let’s take a closer look.

  • Cost Effective: A stronger product means more bang for your buck. You can use less HHC-P and get the same results you might from a bigger dose of delta-8 or delta-9 THC.

  • Legality: As a non-THC cannabinoid, HHC-P serves as a sort of loophole for those seeking THC’s benefits without any of its legal drawbacks. Unfortunately, whether HHC-P will stay untouched by legislation is still up in the air.

  • Strength: Those looking for relief from more severe symptoms can more realistically get the results they need with something stronger. Managing severe pain, for instance, might warrant using something like HHC-P.

  • THC Alternative: Not everyone responds to THC well. Some brains simply don’t mesh well with some cannabinoids. HHC-P offers an alternative that produces similar results but is different enough that it may overcome some of these hurdles.

HHC-P Side Effects: What to Avoid

Side effects for HHC-P are easy to run into due to its potency. Luckily, most of them resolve on their own within a few hours. Most side effects match what you might expect from THC or CBD, including things like:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Red eyes
  • Anxiety or paranoia

While HHC-P might not pose any serious health risks, it can still be too much for some people. If you notice any side effects, stop using HHC-P for the day. If you decide to use it in the future, start with the lowest possible dose and work your way up over time.

Always check in with a doctor before adding a new cannabinoid to your routine, even if you’re a seasoned cannabis lover. There’s a chance HHC-P may interact with prescription medications or existing health conditions, making it potentially unsafe for some.

Final Thoughts: How to Find the Best HHC-P Products

Since HHC-P products are not regulated by government institutions like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it’s up to consumers to make educated and safe choices. Luckily, it’s easy to do that when you shop with sellers and manufacturers you trust.

Always look for information like a certificate of analysis (COA) that lets you see exactly what you’re putting in your body. Be wary of products from brands you’ve never heard of or that don’t provide any details about what’s happening inside. Only shop with established sellers with the experience necessary to vet products for the best results.
