What Strain is Jealousy?

Let’s start by introducing the general characteristics of the Jealousy strain, including the effects and the flavor.

Effects of Jealousy Strain

Jealousy has a very high THC content of up to 30%. It can be evenly balanced between indica and sativa, but often tends towards an indica-heavy variation. As a quick reminder, sativa-dominant strains are best known for their energizing and euphoric effects, while indica-dominant strains have a more relaxing and sedating quality.

And yet, Jealousy is sometimes described as an indica-dominant strain that won’t necessarily knock you out. In fact, it is often renowned for its ability to inspire creativity and imagination. Think of the surge of creativity that you might get after meditating or taking a nap.

Using cannabis to help with creativity is a popular trick. While it is unlikely that cannabis can actually inspire new ideas, it does seem to have the effect of making consumers more open-minded to ideas that they do have. Someone under the influence of cannabis is more likely to view an idea favorably.

Jealousy is also admired for its ability to reduce stress, chronic pain, and elevate mood.

Flavor and Aroma

Jealousy never tasted so sweet. With parents like Gelato and Sherbet, how could it taste otherwise?

Jealousy contains terpenes like caryophyllene, myrcene, limonene, and linalool. Terpenes are a class of volatile organic compounds which commonly contribute to the aromatic properties of plants and essential oils. You might associate these compounds with familiar scents like citrus, fruits, lavender, and warm spices.

Aroma chemistry is complex and difficult to predict. Aromatic compounds interact synergistically to create unique combinations of smells, which strongly induce associations in the observer.

The combination of volatile organic compounds in Jealousy strain produces a dessert-like, fruity and spicy aroma. The aroma itself is responsible also for what we perceive as flavor. (Most of what we consider to be “taste” is actually olfactory.)

THC Content

The most important thing to know about this strain is that it has an incredibly high THC content – averaging around 28%, and even going as high as 30%. This strain is therefore recommended for experienced cannabis smokers.

THC stands for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. It is the predominant psychotropic component of cannabis or marijuana. In other words, it is the major compound responsible for the high you experience from cannabis.

THC makes you high by interacting with CB1 receptors in your brain. CB1 receptors are a part of the endocannabinoid system in humans. They exist under normal (sober) circumstances to bind the natural endocannabinoids produced by your brain. When you consume a phytocannabinoid (a cannabinoid found in plants) like THC, the THC binds to the CB1 receptor much more powerfully than your body’s natural chemicals ever could. Smoking strains or consuming edibles with higher levels of THC leads to a more potent, intense high.

The potency of the Jealousy strain is compounded by the fact that it contains very little CBD. CBD stands for cannabidiol, another cannabinoid in cannabis. While CBD does not have psychoactive activity, it is famous for its powerful therapeutic and relaxing effects.

With respect to the Jealousy strain, the main thing you need to understand about CBD is that it helps to modulate the negative effects of THC, such as anxiety and paranoia. It does this by interacting with the CB1 receptor antagonistically. That means that it binds to the CB1 receptor from a different site, and weakens the interaction with THC. The fact that the Jealousy strain contains very little CBD means that there is nothing to counteract the ultra-high THC content.

If you are susceptible to negative experiences - like anxiety and paranoia - when you smoke high concentrations of THC, Jealousy is probably not the strain for you. Look for strains that have a higher ratio of CBD to THC. That is the best way to reap the benefits of THC without the negative side-effects. Consuming strains that have more CBD may also help with potential hangover effects, as well as long-term mental and emotional effects.

History, Lineage, and Family

Jealousy is a little bit like revenge and a little bit like ice cream – it’s a dish best served cold. That’s because Jealousy is a cross between Gelato41 and Sherbet.

In fact, the parentage of this strain gives some insight into the flavor and characteristics.

About the Genetics

The family tree of Jealousy gets a bit twisted, because it turns out there’s a lot of inbreeding in this family.

Jealousy is a cross between Gelato41 and Sherbet, also known as Sunshine Sherbet.

Gelato41 is a cross of Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies with Sunshine Sherbet.

Sunshine Sherbet is a cross between Girl Scout Cookies and Pink Panties.

About the Off-Spring

Jealousy is also parent to other popular strains you may have heard of. One of the most popular off-shoots of Jealousy is a crossing with Banana Cream Pie, which produced Banana Jealousy.

About the Creator

The human parentage of Jealousy strain is also worth a shout-out. Jealousy was originally bred by Seed Junky Genetics, in collaboration with Minntz.

Remember: Everyone Responds Differently

There are so many different and unpredictable variables that contribute to how you (yes, you personally) experience weed, and strain is only one of them. While other users may have arrived at a general consensus on the Jealousy strain, the only way to know the effect it will have on you is to try it yourself.

Your unique biology influences your ability to metabolize THC and CBD. This plays into both your tolerance and your experience on particular strains. Additionally, your mindset and surroundings can play a huge role in your experience.
