CBD For Erectile Dysfunction

Brie Lowrey

ED can be a pain. No, I’m not talking about someone whose name is Edward… I’m talking about erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction actually affects about 18% of men in the United States. To further highlight the prevalence of erectile dysfunction affecting people, studies done on sexual dysfunctions in transgendered people have been showing that transgendered people can also suffer from erectile dysfunction.

Furthermore, partners of people with penises (sounds like an unfortunate club, doesn’t it? PPWP), can also suffer from the symptoms of erectile dysfunction. Having a partner suffer from ED can feel hopeless and even, a little selfishly, frustrating. You might be suffering emotionally, feel sexually frustrated, or just want your partner to feel better. This can cause stress and anxiety in you, too.

Whether you or your partner is suffering from ED, you are probably looking to find some relief. This article touches on some underlying causes of erectile dysfunction, CBD that may help, and other things you can do to help lessen the symptoms of and possibly prevent ED.

What is ED?

ED, also known as erectile dysfunction, “is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sex”, according to the Mayo Clinic. Now, erectile dysfunction is something that is an ongoing issue. Remember that having trouble from time to time with getting and/or keeping an erection isn’t necessarily something to be concerned about. If you are experiencing issues with getting and/or keeping an erection, read on.

Getting and keeping an erection involves MUCH more than you think. Other than outside stimuli, it also involves the brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles, and blood vessels. That’s a lot of parts to get a machine running and keep it running. If one screw (I’m sorry) comes loose, the whole thing could come down (again, I’m sorry). This means that erectile dysfunction can be the cause of many things that include both psychological and physical ailments. Make sure you see your doctor if you are experiencing erectile dysfunction because it might be caused by an underlying health concern.

Some physical causes of erectile dysfunction include;

  • Medical conditions such as diabetes or heart disease
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Tobacco use
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Sleep disorders

Some psychological and emotional causes of erectile dysfunction include;

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Low libido

While you may be experiencing one or a combination of these, anxiety might always be a recurring problem. Think about it; if you are in the middle of a sexual encounter and you can’t get an erection or keep an erection, this could frustrate you and cause anxiety. Anxiety and stressing about it will almost always worsen the situation and your erectile dysfunction will continue in that manner.

How Does CBD Work?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of the many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It is non-psychoactive and has been showing many health benefits among individuals and in the few studies that have been conducted. CBD helps regulate your ECS (endocannabinoid system). Your ECS is responsible for many functions in your body including;

  • Appetite and digestion
  • Pain management
  • Inflammation
  • Immune system responses
  • Mood
  • Sleep
  • Cardiovascular system
  • Stress management
  • Skin and nerve function
  • …and more

When your ECS becomes imbalanced, CBD can help you regain that balance. It works with the ECS C1 and C2 receptors to help maintain the healthy functions. CBD Oil For ED

At the time of writing this article, there is no research that has been done on CBD benefitting people suffering from erectile dysfunction specifically. However, there are some underlying causes and symptoms of ED that CBD could help improve. ED can be caused by many things from physical to psychological to emotional causes. While CBD can’t “fix” your erectile dysfunction, it can potentially help improve some causes of why you’re having these issues.

Some benefits of CBD that can help relieve some symptoms of ED include;

When you take CBD oil for ED, taking CBD daily will be the most effective and beneficial. Also, taking the proper dose for your body and knowing how long it takes each product to start working will help. For proper dosage, check the label of the product you choose and start at the lowest dose. Work your way up from there. Everyone reacts to CBD differently and will need different dosages depending on body composition, type of product, and more.

CBD For Partners of People With Penises (PPWP)

Partners of people suffering from ED can also be affected by the negative symptoms. Between a potential relationship strain, added stress, and more, partners may suffer in a more emotional way. As I stated previously, CBD can help reduce the stress and anxiety caused by that emotional strain. For more information on CBD and sex, read our blog here

CBD Side Effects

Of course, there can be some side effects when it comes to CBD. You may or may not suffer some of these side effects. To help stave off the potential for these side effects, make sure you are properly dosing your CBD products. In general, start with the lowest dose that your specific product states, then work your way up as needed. Don’t start off with the highest dose, or too high, or you could potentially deal with some of the side effects of CBD.

Some of the side effects of CBD include;

  • Dry mouth
  • Diarrhea
  • Reduced appetite
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue

If you do experience side effects of CBD, stop taking the products, try a lower dose, and always talk to your doctor.

THC For Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

While there isn’t research out there done on CBD for erectile dysfunction, there have been a few studies involving cannabis. According to this study done in 2014, “cannabis sativa” was found to “improve ejaculatory functions” and “delay the time of ejaculation or improve ejaculatory performance”. This study shows that using THC products can potentially improve symptoms of erectile dysfunction. THC also includes the same benefits that CBD does. That means, using THC products might be a better option than CBD if you want to improve your sex life. That being said, THC can be psychoactive, which means you could feel a body and head “high”. Being high feels different for everyone and not everyone will feel the same or even potentially high at all. Read our blog on why you may not feel high here

Feeling high can include altered sensory perceptions, some paranoia, changes in mood and mental state, intense relaxation, affected memory, and more. Everyone’s high can feel different and factors such as how much THC you ingested, the product’s potency, your body chemistry, and more. To help control getting too high, make sure you dose your product properly, which includes giving the product enough time to enter your bloodstream. Remember, even with CBD products, you should wait a certain amount of time before taking more, this is dependent on product type, as we talked about before.

You can also microdose your THC products to help control the psychoactive high caused by these types of products. This simply means to take an even lower dose than recommended on the product and to take it daily, so your body gets used to it and you build a type of tolerance. This won’t work on CBD products, because you can’t build a tolerance to CBD, but will work with THC.

What Else Can You Do For ED?

While CBD can be helpful in some areas of your erectile dysfunction, you may want to add more in to your routine to continue possibly improving your sexual performance and sex drive. There are a few things you can do that may help prevent and lessen the symptoms of ED.

Here are some lifestyle choices that can help you if you suffer from ED;

  • Talk with your doctor to help create a healthy lifestyle
  • See your doctor regularly for checkups and screenings
  • Stop smoking
  • Discontinue alcohol use
  • Avoid using illicit drugs
  • Exercise regularly
  • Add self care into your routine to help control stress
  • Talk to a psychiatrist or psychologist for mental health disorders

Taking these steps and including CBD oil (or other products) into your routine could help improve your sex life and even possibly prevent erectile dysfunction.
